Aquaponics has a learning curve, but it is not near as complicated as some folks make it out to be. SarahMelisse, we have used catfish the entire 10 years we have done Aquaponics.why?because they are pretty well bulletproof in a confined enviroment. O2 levels is the biggest challenge you'll have. An airstone or sprayback aerator solves that. They can tolerate less than good water quality, eat algae, and few disease problems. They are also readily obtainable here in our neck of the woods. It takes 10 months for us to get a 3'-5' fingerling to a pound to a pound and a half eating size.
I know Tilapia is the preferred fish for Aquaponics, but you can't take those through the wintertime without supplemental heating. We throw in a stock tank heater with the catfish and that is all they need. We use 3ft high, 7 ft round cattle field stock tanks to hold our fish. I don't know all of the details, but they seem to be making it work. We thought about it as we have several greenhouses including a huge one that we could rework.
My husband thought he could build another rocket mass heater in the middle of the greenhouse to keep the temperature stable. The problem is that we are remote and getting foundation stock is a bit iffy.
